• Cracked or clouded glass: Heat-resistant glass can crack from thermal stress or age, and older glass can cloud or discolor.
• Worn seals and gaskets: The gasket material around the door frame breaks down with heat exposure, which lets air leak past the door even when it’s closed.
• Sticking or broken hardware: Hinges, handles, and mesh curtain tracks wear out with regular use.

Should you repair or replace? It depends on the age of the doors and the condition of the fireplace itself. A newer door with a single worn seal or a minor hardware issue is often a quick, inexpensive repair. But if the frame is warped, the glass is cracked, or the doors are older and no longer match the fireplace’s current venting or clearance needs, replacement is usually the better long-term investment; a repaired-but-outdated door can still leak heat and won’t necessarily meet current safety clearances.
