Get Ready for a Safe and Cozy Season

A fireplace that sat unused all summer can look exactly the same as it did last spring. But a lot can change in a few months. Water gets in, animals move in, and metal parts rust.

This checklist is based on what our team has found on recent jobs across Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia. Start with the five checks you can do yourself. If anything looks off, hold off on lighting a fire and have it inspected.

Fall Fireplace Checklist

Chimney Inspection by Priddy Chimney team

1. Schedule a Chimney Inspection

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends annual inspections for every chimney, fireplace, and vented heating appliance. Our CSIA-certified technicians will check the flue, damper, masonry, and other components to make sure everything is in proper working order and identify hidden issues before they become costly problems.

Some problems only show up on camera. During a property-wide inspection of 110 fireplaces in Howard County, the most common buildup we found was where the damper meets the flue, which wasn’t visible from the firebox. Every Priddy Level 1 inspection includes a camera scan of the flue.

Chimney Sweep and Cleaning by Priddy Chimney

2. Get a Professional Sweep

Creosote, soot, and even bird nests can build up inside your chimney. A professional chimney sweep removes these blockages to reduce the risk of chimney fires and improve airflow. Even if you only burned a few fires last season, sweeping before fall ensures your system is safe and clean.

Chimney Cap Inspection by Priddy Chimney

3. Check the Outside Too

Your chimney cap is your first line of defense against water damage, animals, and debris. This fall, make sure it’s secure and in good condition. Also, remember to have any branches or leaves near the chimney removed to reduce fire risks and allow smoke to vent properly.

On a recent job in Montgomery County, a chimney that hadn’t been inspected in a while had a cracked crown, worn mortar, and loose flashing, all letting water in.

4. Clean Out the Firebox & Ashes

If you have leftover ashes from last season, remove them before your first fire. Old ash can attract moisture and create odors. A quick sweep of the firebox keeps your fireplace looking fresh and ready to use.

While you’re there, look for rust on the damper or white deposits on the walls. Both usually mean water is getting in, and it’s worth having checked.

Firewood

5. Stock Up on the Right Firewood

The wood you burn matters. Choose seasoned hardwoods like oak, maple, or ash for longer, cleaner burns. Avoid freshly cut or “green” wood, it creates more smoke and creosote. Store your firewood off the ground and away from your home to keep it dry and pest-free.

Smoke Detector

6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Your fireplace is part of your home’s safety system. Fresh batteries in smoke and CO detectors provide an extra layer of protection for your family. Make testing them part of your fall routine.

Fall Fireplace Decor

7. Keep Your Fall Décor Fire-Safe

Pumpkins, wreaths, and cozy fall decorations make your hearth feel inviting. Just be sure they’re non-flammable and placed far enough away from flames and heat. You’ll enjoy the seasonal charm without added risk.

Fireplace Tools

8. Add or Update Fireplace Accessories

Make sure your tools are in good shape. A sturdy poker, shovel, and tongs make tending fires easier. A well-fitted screen or set of glass doors adds both safety and style, protecting kids, pets, and your flooring from sparks.

Electric fireplace

9. Improve Efficiency

Fall is the perfect time to make upgrades. Adding glass doors, sealing fireplace inserts, or repairing damaged masonry can make your fireplace more efficient and prevent heat loss. You’ll enjoy a warmer, more comfortable home all season.

Calendar Scheduling

10. Book Early for Peace of Mind

Once the weather turns cold, chimney service schedules fill up fast. Booking your inspection and sweep early ensures you’re ready to enjoy your fireplace whenever the mood strikes.

Preparing your fireplace each fall isn’t just about keeping the flames burning bright—it’s about safety, efficiency, and enjoying your home to the fullest. With professional care and a few smart steps, you’ll be ready for a warm, worry-free season.

Why Fireplace Maintenance Matters in the Fall

Fall is the ideal time to prepare your fireplace for the season ahead. By scheduling inspections and cleanings now, you avoid the rush of winter when service schedules fill up quickly. Even more important, a well-maintained fireplace reduces fire hazards, improves heating efficiency, and gives you peace of mind every time you light a fire.

Throat Dampers: The Small Part That Keeps Your Fireplace Safe and Efficient

A small part doing a big job It is totally understandable if you’ve never heard the term “throat damper.” It’s a component most homeowners never think about until something goes very wrong: a gas smell in the house, logs that scorch and overburn, or a fireplace that just doesn’t seem to draft the way it should. Understanding what a throat damper is, why it matters, and how to tell if yours is installed correctly can save you from all three. What is a throat damper? A throat damper is a metal

Prefabricated Fireplaces: What Every Condo and Townhouse Owner Should Know

Cheap to build, costly to ignore. If you live in a condo, townhouse, or HOA community, there’s a good chance the fireplace in your home isn’t a traditional masonry fireplace at all. It’s likely what’s known as a prefabricated fireplace. These are often called factory-built or ‘prefab’ fireplaces, and many are designed as zero-clearance systems. Understanding how these units work (and where they tend to fail) can save you a lot of frustration, and potentially prevent a real safety and fire hazard. Recently, Priddy Chimney converted an inefficient prefabricated fireplace to

A More Attractive Chimney Cap: The Benefits of Hip and Ridge Caps

Not all chimney caps are created equal. Most chimney caps do one job: cover the flue opening. A hip and ridge cap does something broader. It covers the whole top of the chimney, and for the right chimney, that’s a meaningful upgrade. For many others, a standard cap is exactly what you need. This guide explains the difference so you can tell which situation you’re in. What Is a Hip and Ridge Chimney Cap? A hip and ridge chimney cap is a custom-fabricated cover built to fit the full top of
